appreciate

I went to professor's Hollywood capoeira class last Wednesday. There's this girl there that i've known has been going to that class ever since I started with professor versatil three years ago. As we were all practicing, I noticed something odd about her foot. It didn't seem that animated. Come to think of it, it was the first time i had seen her without shoes before. Usually she practices with sneakers on. After like.. a triple take (i'm really bad at that), I noticed one of her foot is prosthetic.

This was kinda shocking to me in a number of ways. She's not a bad capoerista at all. She has never had a bad attitude in class. And she's always extremely nice, friendly and upbeat. She is by no means choosing an easy hobby due to to all the intricate footwork with capoeira but she still excels and continues practice diligently. She is definitely an inspiration.

Janitor Jose

Hey

Let me tell you a little about Jose, the Janitor at work. I've had the pleasure of having Jose work on my floor for the past two years. He cleans the bathrooms, collects trash from the cubicles, vacuums in the mornings, and keeps things in order in the maze of cubicles at work. He likes to pull out a picture of his son who has a degree and is married to an Asian girl. Jose is probably in his late 40's. He has a peppered grey mustache and beard with combed hair, and shoes always clean. He kind of looks like a younger version of the Dos equis man. The man has swag.

Besides the occasional exchange of Spanish with him and the impromptu English vocabulary lessons I give him, Jose is quite the fountain of fashion advice.

1st lesson learned: The first thing a woman looks at in a man, is not his eyes, his shirt, or hair. It is his shoes. (Imagine this being said in a light Spanish accent).  So what does he give me the next day? A pair of extra black shoes he had that are actually pretty decent.

Couple weeks later, he gives me this zip up track jacket.

Couple weeks later, he gives me five pairs of jeans.  Half of them are of pretty good quality. One pair of jeans is white.

Two weeks ago, he gives me another five pairs of jeans. Haven't had the chance to try all these on yet.

Eventually he implies what he wants. He just wants some thick socks from Costco. I plan to get him a pack soon.

Today he sold me a pair of brown fubu shoes. And they're clean.

Jose is kind of like personal clothing consultant. Pretty cool.

capoeira and culture

last night, instead of the normal capoeira class, i took a west African dance class from a young and enthusiastic teacher from Senegal. She spoke french and some English. She taught us choreography through body language and some broken English.

The only other person I met who is from the African continent also speaks french and does capoeira.

I'm thankful for the variety of cultures and people i'm exposed to through capoeira.
